Get Ready for the Eclipse

Get Ready for the Eclipse takes place at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on Wednesday 5 August 2026. The one-day programme includes free family activities from 12pm to 4pm, presenter-led planetarium shows, and live talks ahead of August’s partial solar eclipse.

The free drop-in activities cover safe eclipse viewing and solar telescopes, while the planetarium programme adds live astronomy and question-and-answer sessions.

What To Expect

Families can drop in between 12pm and 4pm for hands-on activities. Planetarium shows run at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm, with Astronomer Royal for Scotland Catherine Heymans joining the 12pm and 2pm sessions for talks and questions.

Tickets & Entry

The drop-in activities are free and do not require a Dynamic Earth admission ticket. The planetarium shows require either a Planetarium Only ticket or standard Dynamic Earth admission, with seating allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Location

Dynamic Earth is on Holyrood Road beside Holyrood Park and the Scottish Parliament, a short walk from the lower end of the Royal Mile.

Getting There

Edinburgh Waverley is the nearest main railway station. The venue is also served by city-centre buses, while walking from the Old Town is straightforward.

Our Tips

• Arrive at the planetarium waiting area at least 10 minutes before your chosen show.
• Use eclipse glasses or approved viewing equipment for any real-world eclipse viewing.
• Allow time for Festival-season travel around the Old Town.
