Edinburgh’s First Free Disc Golf Course Opens in Hailes Quarry Park
Edinburgh now has its first permanent disc golf course after the new facility at Hailes Quarry Park officially opened last week.
The 11-hole course is free to use and open to everyone, with no booking required. It was formally opened on 20 April 2026 by Councillor Margaret Graham, the council’s Culture and Communities Convener.
Culture and Communities Convener, Cllr Margaret Graham, said:
“We are really pleased to be able to offer more activities at Hailes Quarry Park and the fact that they are free and accessible to everyone makes them an excellent resource for the community. And I hope more people give the sport a try.
A priority for the Council is to provide more opportunities for people to get active and encourage greater participation in sports as part of a healthy lifestyle. The new course will help us to achieve this and will be a real asset for local people of all ages.”
Why this matters locally
Disc golf has been growing steadily across Scotland, but until now, Edinburgh had no dedicated course.
The new facility at Hailes Quarry Park gives locals, families, students, and visitors a low-cost way to get outdoors in a popular west Edinburgh green space north of the Union Canal.

What the course offers
The course was developed and will be maintained by the Edinburgh Disc Golf Community (EDGC), with support from the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). It features 11 holes with baskets already in place (tee pads are being finalised).
Peter Dawson from the EDGC said it was “brilliant to finally be opening Edinburgh’s first disc golf course”. The group had campaigned for several years to make it happen.
How to play
- Location: Hailes Quarry Park, west Edinburgh (near the Union Canal)
- Access: Free and open to the public at all times the park is open
- Equipment: You can bring your own discs or start with basic ones (many players begin with just a putter and a driver)
- Rules: Similar to traditional golf but played with flying discs – throw from the tee, aim for the basket in as few throws as possible
The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced players. Council officers noted it adds another active option to the park, which is already well used by walkers, cyclists, and families.

Our take
This is a straightforward, practical addition that fills a genuine gap. A free, accessible course in a good location should bring more people into the sport without any barriers.
