Free School Uniform Exchange Opens in Edinburgh Next Week

The Leith Collective is bringing back its free school uniform exchange to help families in Edinburgh ahead of the new school year.

The Leith Collective will open a free school uniform exchange at its Ocean Terminal and Fort Kinnaird stores in Edinburgh from Friday, 26 June 2026.

Back for its fourth year, the exchange lets families collect high-quality school uniforms, coats, gym kits, shoes, school bags, and pencil cases free of charge.

There is no referral process and no charge. Families can collect what they need during store opening hours.

What Families Can Collect

The uniform exchange is designed to help families struggling with the cost of getting their children ready for the new school year in August.

Items available may include:

  • School uniforms
  • Coats
  • Gym kits
  • Shoes
  • Schoolbags
  • Pencil cases

The Leith Collective says the exchange is open to families in need, with items available completely free and “no questions asked”.

Donations Needed Before The New Term

The Leith Collective is also asking people in Edinburgh to donate good quality, pre-loved school items.

Local businesses with surplus new stock are also being asked to help.

Founder Sara Thomson said the aim is to ensure pupils can start the school year on equal footing.

“Every day I see first-hand the huge inequality here in Edinburgh,” she said. “Education has the power to provide a path out of poverty, but for some children, just accessing that education is fraught with obstacles. A lack of uniform is one of them.

“I hope that providing good quality items, no child will feel forced to skip school because they fear being judged for not having a uniform or for wearing ill-fitting or worn-out items.”

What To Donate

The most useful donations are clean, good quality items that another child can use straight away.

That includes uniforms, coats, PE kit, school shoes, bags, and stationery items such as pencil cases.

Donations can be dropped off at any Leith Collective store during opening hours.
