St Andrew Square Garden

St Andrew Square Garden

St Andrew Square Garden is a public green space in the centre of Edinburgh’s New Town. It sits inside the wider St Andrew Square, surrounded by shops, restaurants, offices, hotels, and major transport links.

The garden dates back to the original development of the New Town and was opened for general public use in 2008 after major improvement work. Its central feature is the Melville Monument, with lawns, flowerbeds, benches, pathways, and a modern pavilion arranged around it.

A City-Centre Garden and Event Space

Most visitors use the garden as a place to sit, meet, or take a break from the surrounding shopping streets. Its position beside George Street, Multrees Walk, and Princes Street makes it one of the easiest green spaces to reach in central Edinburgh.

The garden is also used for temporary art, exhibitions, community activity, outdoor screenings, and festival events. Larger installations can restrict parts of the lawn or change the usual entrance arrangements, particularly during busy festival periods.

Getting There

St Andrew Square tram stop is directly beside the garden, and Edinburgh Bus Station is just off the north-east corner. Waverley station is around five to ten minutes away on foot. Local buses stop on George Street, Princes Street, and South St David Street.

The garden is privately owned but managed and maintained by Essential Edinburgh. Permission is required for organised filming and events outside normal public use. See the official St Andrew Square Garden information for management and hire details.

Opening hours

Public garden access is normally available daily. Temporary events, maintenance, and seasonal installations may affect entrances or opening times.
