Physicians Gallery Edinburgh

Physicians’ Gallery

Physicians’ Gallery is a free museum and exhibition space at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on Queen Street. Its displays examine the science, practice, and human impact of medicine, using historic objects, documents, artworks, and contemporary research.

The gallery sits within the College’s New Town buildings and runs a changing programme rather than one fixed permanent display. Previous and current themes have covered subjects such as mental health, alchemy, addiction, animals, medical treatment, and the history of the human body.

Exhibitions, Talks, and Collections

Temporary exhibitions are developed with historians, doctors, scientists, artists, and partner organisations. Displays are designed for general visitors, so you do not need a medical background to follow the material.

The programme also includes curator talks, workshops, tours, and family or school activities. Some events are free but require advance booking because room capacity is limited. The College’s library and archive are separate research resources and may have different access arrangements.

Planning a Visit

The gallery is at 11 Queen Street in Edinburgh’s New Town, close to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Princes Street and George Street are a short walk away, and the nearest tram stops are Princes Street and St Andrew Square.

Entry to the gallery is free. Opening times can be affected by holidays, exhibition changeovers, and College events, so check the official Physicians’ Gallery website before travelling.
