What To Expect

Food traders and bars operate around the gardens, with live music running alongside talks, demonstrations, workshops, and family activity. The announced 2026 programme includes Scottish folk band Breabach, Seth Lakeman, An Dannsa Dub, and Dlù, with further performers and traders added through the summer.

The festival acts as the opening stretch of Assembly’s summer season before the wider Fringe programme begins. Seating is spread around the gardens, but it can fill quickly during popular music sets and sunny weekend periods.

Entry and Practical Information

General admission to the gardens is free. Some shows in the Piccolo and Palais du Variété are separately ticketed, so check the official festival website for the latest programme, entry details, and opening times.

Location and Getting There

The festival is held at Assembly George Square Gardens in the Southside. It is close to the University of Edinburgh, Bristo Square, the Meadows, and the National Museum of Scotland. Buses stop on South Bridge and Nicolson Street, and Waverley station is around 20 minutes away on foot.

Our Tips

  • Check whether a particular performance is free or ticketed before joining a venue queue.
  • Visit earlier in the day for shorter food queues and more available seating.
  • Use public transport because parking around George Square is limited during festival season.

Programme announcements, trader details, and opening updates are published by the Edinburgh Folk & Food Festival.
