Scotland fans, Highland dancers and a piper at Edinburgh Airport before the World Cup

Watch: Tartan Army Gets Edinburgh Airport Send-Off Before World Cup

Scotland fans heading to the World Cup were given a noisy send-off at Edinburgh Airport on Thursday, with Highland dancers and a pipe band from the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo leading supporters through the terminal.

The send-off came as members of the Tartan Army began their journey to the United States, where Scotland are preparing for their first men’s World Cup appearance in 28 years.

The video shows fans joining a “kiltwalk” through Edinburgh Airport, with music, dancing, and plenty of singing before departure.

According to STV News, dozens of Scotland supporters joined in as the dancers and pipers moved through the airport towards the departure gates.

The moment was arranged ahead of Scotland’s opening World Cup match against Haiti in Boston. Steve Clarke’s side are also due to face Morocco and Brazil in Group C.

Why It Matters

Scotland last played at a men’s World Cup in 1998, so this is not just another away trip for fans.

For many, this will be the first time they have seen Scotland at a World Cup. For others, it is the return of something they have waited nearly three decades to experience again.

Edinburgh Airport is already one of the main departure points for Scottish fans travelling abroad, but this was a bit different. The usual airport rush turned into a proper send-off.

Edinburgh Airport Joins the Build-Up

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo helped bring the noise, with Highland dancers and a pipe band giving the departure hall a very Scottish feel.

STV News reported that airport staff had worked with partners, including the Scottish FA, to create a fan hub and mark the start of the journey.

It’s a smart local touch. Airports are not always places people enjoy hanging out, but this gave travelling fans a lasting memory before they even boarded their flights.
