16 People Ill After Visits to Craigies Farm Petting Experience Near Edinburgh
Sixteen confirmed cases of cryptosporidiosis have been linked to a lamb feeding experience at Craigies Farm in South Queensferry. NHS Lothian is investigating a cluster affecting adults and children who visited the popular family attraction.
The lamb feeding sessions ran until 4 May and have now ended as planned. The farm remains open for its cafe, farm shop, playbarn and other activities, with strengthened hygiene measures in place.
What is cryptosporidiosis?
Cryptosporidiosis (often shortened to “crypto”) is a parasitic infection common in spring among young farm animals, such as lambs.
It spreads through contact with infected animals or their environment and causes watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever and loss of appetite. Symptoms can last up to two weeks and hit young children harder, sometimes leading to dehydration.
Most people recover with rest and fluids, but anyone with severe symptoms should contact their GP or call NHS 24 on 111.
Farm response
Owner John Sinclair said the farm takes reports of illness “very seriously”. Environmental health officers visited the site and were satisfied with existing controls, including handwashing facilities and visitor guidance.
The farm has increased cleaning in animal areas, stopped lamb cuddling, and continues to review hygiene messaging. It works with the National Farm Attractions Network on best practices for these experiences.
Advice for visitors
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching animals, before eating, or leaving the farm.
- Supervise young children closely around handwashing.
- Avoid eating or drinking in animal areas.
Craigies Farm is still welcoming visitors for its Scottish Tulip Festival (running selected dates into mid-May), cafe, shop and play facilities. Check the latest updates directly on their site before heading out.

This is a reminder that good hand hygiene remains the main defence at any petting farm or animal attraction, especially during lambing season. NHS Lothian and environmental health teams continue to monitor the situation.
