The Writers’ Museum

The Writers’ Museum is a free literary museum in Lady Stair’s House, tucked into a close just off the Lawnmarket. It focuses on Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson through portraits, manuscripts, rare books and personal possessions.

Highlights include Burns’ writing desk, Scott’s childhood rocking horse, Stevenson’s riding boots and first editions of well-known works. The building is part of the experience too. Lady Stair’s House is a 17th-century townhouse reached through a small courtyard beside Makars’ Court, where quotations from Scottish writers are set into the paving stones.

Planning a Visit

Entry is free and the museum is compact enough to fit into a Royal Mile walk. The old building has narrow stairs and uneven areas, so checking access information first is sensible if mobility is a concern.

Getting There

Lady Stair’s Close opens from the Lawnmarket near the upper Royal Mile. Waverley Station is around 15 minutes away on foot, with buses stopping on George IV Bridge and North Bridge. See the official Writers’ Museum page before visiting.
