Edinburgh Science Festival 2026 Kicks Off This Weekend – Going Global!

Spring has sprung in Edinburgh, and what better way to celebrate than by diving into the wonders of science? The Edinburgh Science Festival 2026 returns this weekend (Saturday 4 to Sunday 19 April) with its biggest programme yet under the inspiring theme “Going Global”.

This much-loved event – the UK’s largest science festival and the world’s first when it launched back in 1989 – transforms the city into a playground of discovery.

Expect hands-on workshops, explosive shows, thought-provoking talks, and stunning art installations that show how science connects us all across borders.

What’s the “Going Global” Theme All About?

This year’s festival celebrates science as a shared human adventure. It highlights international collaborations tackling big challenges like climate change, health, and sustainability – many of which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. You’ll also see Scotland’s proud role in global scientific breakthroughs celebrated throughout the programme.

With over 117 events across 25 venues, there really is something for everyone – whether you’re bringing the kids for some Easter holiday fun or looking for an inspiring evening out.

Don’t Miss These Highlights

  • The Great Instauration – A brand-new large-scale art installation by Dr Gayle Chong Kwan in the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland. This stunning piece blends scientific instruments, history, and hidden stories from the Scottish Enlightenment. It’s free to view throughout the festival and comes with hands-on family activities exploring light, instruments, and storytelling.
  • Star Speakers: On Sunday, 12 April at the Usher Hall, catch wildlife presenter and Strictly favourite Hamza Yassin sharing his adventures in nature. The same day, the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman, reflects on her historic mission and the power of global space collaboration.
  • Family Favourites at the National Museum of Scotland: From 13–19 April, enjoy Dig Up a Dino, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Splat-tastic!, Mini-Medics, and The Rocket Show. Plus free drop-in sessions like Tech Decoded.
  • Science Nights Out and Adult Talks: Evening events range from witty journeys to the Arctic and Antarctica to discussions on data, design, and global challenges.
