Sea Breeze Cafe Gets Six-Month Lifeline After Closure U-Turn

Sea Breeze Cafe on Leith Walk will stay open for at least another six months, just days after it had been due to close for good.

The long-running Edinburgh cafe, based at 261-261A Leith Walk, was expected to shut on Thursday 14 May 2026 after nearly 20 years in business. Owners had blamed rising rent costs for making the business difficult to sustain.

The cafe has now reversed that decision, and will continue trading for the next six months while it tries to keep the business going.

In a message to customers, the Sea Breeze Cafe team said it was “not ready to give up just yet” after facing “some very difficult challenges”.

“We are committed to keeping the cafe open for the next 6 months, and we are fighting hard to ensure that Sea Breeze remains a part of this community for as long as possible.”

The team also thanked regulars for their support, saying every visit, breakfast and cup of tea helps the cafe keep going.

Why Sea Breeze Was Due To Close

Sea Breeze Cafe had announced in April that it would close permanently after almost two decades on Leith Walk. The reason given was rising rent, with owners saying the increase had made it too difficult to keep operating.

The closure would have meant the loss of another long-standing neighbourhood cafe on one of Edinburgh’s busiest streets.

Sea Breeze has built its name on straightforward cafe food, including breakfasts, rolls, baked potatoes, toasties, omelettes, soups and hot drinks. Its Just Eat menu still lists it mainly around breakfast, meals, children’s food and simple cafe staples.

What Has Changed?

The cafe team now says it will remain open for the next six months.

In its update, Sea Breeze said local support had played a part in the decision and asked people to keep visiting. The message was simple: every cup of tea, breakfast and visit helps the business stay open.

That does not mean the long-term issue has gone away. The six-month extension gives the cafe more time, but the original rent pressure still appears to be the main problem.

Why This Matters Locally

Leith Walk has changed heavily over the past decade. New bars, restaurants and cafes have opened along the route, while older independent businesses have had to deal with higher costs, tram works disruption, rising rents and changing footfall.

Sea Breeze is the kind of place that can easily be overlooked in a city full of new openings. It is not trying to be trendy. That is part of the point.

For regulars, the appeal is more practical:

  • affordable breakfasts
  • familiar staff
  • a straightforward local cafe feel
  • a long-standing spot on Leith Walk

Its short-term reprieve will be welcome news for people who thought they had already had their last breakfast there.

What Happens Next?

For now, Sea Breeze Cafe is open and continuing to trade from Leith Walk.

The next six months will likely decide whether the cafe can find a workable way forward. That could mean stronger footfall, new terms, a relocation, or another change behind the scenes.

For customers, the immediate point is simpler: the cafe is still there, and the closure has not happened.

Our Take

This is a small story, but it says quite a lot about Edinburgh’s high streets.

New openings get most of the attention, but places like Sea Breeze are often the ones people use week after week. A six-month stay is not a full rescue, but it does give a long-running Leith Walk cafe more time.
