Plans For New Indoor Tennis and Padel Centre Revealed at Fort Kinnaird

A major new indoor tennis and padel centre has been proposed at Fort Kinnaird in south-east Edinburgh.

Developer Artemis Sports Ltd has lodged a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) with the City of Edinburgh Council. If approved, the facility would bring year-round indoor courts to the area near the popular retail park.

Why this matters

Padel is one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports, yet Edinburgh still has very limited dedicated indoor facilities.

The plans also include community tennis programmes, coaching and performance pathways, which could give local players – especially families and juniors – proper all-weather access close to home.

Location and what’s proposed

The site sits close to, but separate from, Fort Kinnaird shopping centre. It would feature indoor tennis courts designed for coaching, recreational play, community use and talent development, plus indoor padel courts.

The developer has promised affordable community pricing, school partnerships and programmes for all ages and abilities. A spokesperson said the centre would create “a much-needed indoor space for active wellbeing all year round” in an area already popular with families.

Public Consultation Events

Two drop-in sessions have been arranged so locals can see the plans and give feedback:

  • Wednesday 22 April 4pm–7.30pm Danderhall Community Hub, 59 Edmonstone Road, Danderhall EH22 1QL
  • Thursday 21 May 4pm–7.30pm Conference Room and Piano Bar, Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh EH21 6UU

Next Steps

The PAN is the first formal step. A full planning application will follow the consultations. The council will then decide whether to grant permission.

Our Take

Edinburgh has been short of good indoor racquets facilities for years. A properly planned centre at Fort Kinnaird, with genuine community access and padel included, would be a win for families and amateur players across the south-east of the city.
