National Library of Scotland

The National Library of Scotland’s main Edinburgh building stands on George IV Bridge. It is both a research library and a public cultural venue, with reading rooms, exhibitions, talks, workshops, a café and a shop under one roof.

Anyone can visit the public areas and exhibitions, while joining the Library is free for people who want to consult material in the reading rooms. The collections cover books, newspapers, manuscripts, maps, music, photographs and digital material linked to Scotland and the wider world.

Planning a Visit

The exhibitions and public spaces are useful even if you’re not carrying out formal research. A library card and identification are needed for some collection services, so check the joining guidance if you plan to request material.

Getting There
