Colour Collective at The Fruitmarket Gallery

Fri 27 – Sun 29 Oct, 11am–6pm.

We are extremely proud to present Colour Collective, an exhibition of artwork made by pupils from six local Edinburgh primary, secondary and special schools. Over the last month, 104 pupils have worked with artists Louise Fraser and Jenny Bell Harman to explore ideas generated by Brazilian artist Jac Leirner’s exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery. This is the second year of funding from the Garcia Family Foundation that has enabled us to work with local schools and produce an exhibition of their work. The schools involved are Drummond Community High School, Pilrig Park School, Prospect Bank School, Royal Mile Primary School, St Mary’s RC Primary School and St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School.

The pupils explored Leirner’s art practice through group discussion and creative practical activities; exploring her ideas, processes, and materials. Taking inspiration from the artist’s work they tried new ways of making art using colour, shapes, rhythm and everyday objects to make drawing, sculpture and documentation.

In the exhibition you will see playful anthropomorphic sculptures, expressive painting and mood drawings, colourful collections of objects, visual research documentation made directly onto table tops, squidgy circuit boards, musical scores, and a collaborative installation of watercolour cubes made by every pupil. The title of the exhibition was chosen with Higher and Advanced Higher pupils from St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School, who explored art terms and language.

The exhibition will be open to the public Friday 27– Sun 29 October, 11am–6pm.
