Edinburgh Old Town
Edinburgh’s Old Town is the historic heart of the city — a maze of medieval closes, towering tenements, cobbled streets and iconic landmarks stretching from Edinburgh Castle down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace.
It’s one of Europe’s most atmospheric urban areas and forms half of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site with the New Town opposite.
The Old Town is packed with major attractions: the Castle, St Giles’ Cathedral, Victoria Street, Grassmarket, The Vennel viewpoint, the National Museum of Scotland, the Real Mary King’s Close, and more.
Narrow lanes (known as “closes”) lead off the Royal Mile in every direction, each with their own stories and hidden gems.
This is Edinburgh at its most dramatic — steep streets, layered history, street performers, independent shops, cosy pubs, and centuries of culture all condensed into one walkable district.
