The King’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse

The King’s Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse is one of Edinburgh’s main venues for exhibitions drawn from the Royal Collection.

Located at the foot of the Royal Mile, the gallery gives visitors the chance to see artworks and historic objects that are not always on permanent display elsewhere.

The programme changes regularly and can include old master paintings, rare furniture, decorative arts, photography and material connected to royal history. That rotating format makes the gallery worth checking even if you have visited before, as the subject, layout, and objects on display can be completely different from one exhibition to the next.

The gallery itself was created within the shell of the former Holyrood Free Church and Duchess of Gordon’s School, buildings originally constructed in the 1840s.

Today, the interior provides a modern open-plan exhibition space while retaining a clear connection to the historic Palace precinct.

Combining Your Visit

The King’s Gallery sits beside the Palace of Holyroodhouse, making the two attractions easy to combine. The Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Park, and Dynamic Earth are also nearby. Tickets are sold separately, although combined admission may be offered for selected exhibitions.
