Winter Haircare By Robbie Bruce at Roku

As the seasons change from Summer through Autumn and then on to Winter, the needs of your hair and scalp change just like your skin.

The cooler weather can really take its toll resulting in a drier scalp, duller hair, static and frizz.  An overall lack of shiny, smooth luscious hair and styling problems can also occur by wearing those winter hats.

Exposure to the winter elements zaps your hair of moisture which will make it brittle and susceptible to damage. Not only is your precious hair more at risk of breakage, but your scalp will experience dryness and dandruff. Temperature differences between heated air inside and cooler air outside can also reduce the moisture content of your hair and scalp.

If you wear hats to keep warm, the material can rub against the hair fibres creating static electricity. This can also cause your hair to look dull which combined will make styling and controlling of your hair a nightmare!

Here are my top tips for the major problems:

Problem: Fly-away hair caused by interior heating:

Solution: Styling products that prevent fly-away/static hair include moisture mousses like Davines – More inside, this is a curl moisturising mousse. You can also use hair oils and serums such as Eleven Australia’s Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum or Davines Oi Oil!

Problem: Dull-looking brittle hair caused by heat and friction.

Solution: A Rich conditioning Treatment with Oil Extracts, this helps prevent damage and makes already damaged hair cuticle layers smoother. Top Tip – add a little hair oil into your shampoo!! Products such as Davines Oi Shampoo and conditioner contain Roucou Oil or you can add some Authentic Formulas Nourishing Oil (Davines) to any salon shampoo you have to give extra nourishment.

Problem: Breakage from Fibres from wearing a hat.

Solution: Wrap your hair in a silk scarf before putting on a cosy hat to protect from frizz and static. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and is known to prevent knotted hair, split ends and also stimulates hydration unlike cotton or wool, which may feel soft, but the fibres weaved together actually grip and tug the strands causing damage, also a silk pillow slip is always a must!

Problem: Dry Flaky scalp caused in cooler months.

Solution: Apply a heavier oil treatment such as coconut oil or castor oil directly to the scalp whenever you feel the need. Perhaps on a selfcare Sunday or on a day off. Let the oil sink in for 20-30 minutes to deeply moisturise the scalp then shampoo and condition your hair as normal.

Other tips to add or remove from your haircare routine include:

  • Avoid frequent hair washes if possible
  • Avoid too much heat styling
  • Dry your hair before you rush out the door as dry hair can deal with the harsh elements better
  • Commit to a weekly hair mask
  • Use dry shampoo for limp hair, to revive a style and avoid over-washing
  • Stay hydrated as hair is made up of 25% water and hydration starts from within
