The Fun Erupts at Our Dynamic Earth!

Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh Gallery

Things are hotting up at Our Dynamic Earth this summer, as the five star attraction overflows with volcanic action.

Making its debut at the attraction is the explosive ‘Supervolcanoes’ in the awe-inspiring ShowDome. Visitors get to witness volcanoes at their mightiest as they are taken on a thrilling journey: flying from giant volcanoes on other planets, to the legendaryNorth American hot spot, Yellowstone National Park.

Narrated by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, ‘Supervolcanoes’ explores the impact of colossal eruptions around our solar system, and questions whether a supervolcano could erupt in our time.  The360-degree full dome projection is screened with 10.2 surround sound, providing a fully immersive, high impact cinematic experience, bringing the audience right into the action.

On 1 July, Dynamic Earth also opens a new gallery, ‘Earth’s Core’ which continues the fascinating James Hutton story recently unveiled in the ‘Scotland’s Timelords’ galleries. Situated in the earthy dome in front of the iconic building – an area which has been closed to the public since 2007 – Earth’s Core takes visitors on a voyage to the centre of the earth. Through the use of high quality projections, the gallery showcases Hutton’s theories and demonstrates the secrets of our planet.

Other special events for the summer months include family-friendly guided geo-walks around Edinburgh’s own volcano, Arthur’s Seat. Visitors can follow in the footsteps of Hutton, searching for evidence of creeping glaciers and ancient seas, as Dynamic Earth’s education officers explain the fascinating geological history of the area, with an engaging mix of storytelling, activities and observations.

Until the end of October, visitors to Dynamic Earth will also be able to see the Edinburgh International Science Festival’s Living Lights exhibition, which will be on display outside the attraction.

Commenting on this summer’s additions to the attraction, Eilidh Massie, marketing manager of Dynamic Earth said: “We’re very excited about adding extra heat to the Scottish summer with our volcano theme. We really have something for everyone: from following in the footsteps of James Hutton to flying across volcanoes – and even some Benedict Cumberbatch!  We’re sure that our visitors are going to love it. Our ShowDome films are always a big hit with children and adults alike, and ‘Supervolcanoes’ is one of the most dramatic we’ve ever had – it’s definitely a must-see!”

As well as the new galleries and ShowDome film, regular Dynamic Earth features include Scotland’s only permanent 4D cinema, a real iceberg, a bone-shaking earthquake, and a tropical rainforest.

Supervolcanoes will be showing at regular intervals daily until the end of August. The guided geo walks will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 24 July – 14 August (excluding 31 July) at 2pm. The geo-walks and ShowDome film are free with admission to Our Dynamic Earth. Those who would like to attend the geo walk without entry to Dynamic Earth can buy tickets from the front desk for £2.95 each.

In April, Dynamic Earth opened its biggest ever redevelopment, ‘Scotland’s Timelords – A new beginning’, following a £1million investment.
