Summer Hair Tips With Neil Barton

Most people want to go lighter when it comes to the summer months and will often opt for highlights. However, clients should take into consideration how light they want their hair to go, as the sun can lift highlights and make them go even lighter.

When it comes to getting your hair colour done before a summer holiday book your colour appointment around one month before you go if you are not using UV protection. Colour can sometimes fade or change in the sun.

I always recommend using a colour enhancing/saving shampoo and conditioner when you are on holiday and throughout the summer months, preferably with UV protection.

To keep your colour looking its best.  Goldwell’s DualSenses Color Rich Brilliance Shampoo and Brilliance Conditioner are two of my favourite products for bringing out luminosity in coloured hair. They include a unique FadeStopFormula too, which minimises hair colour from fading with each use.

Another key tip to keeping your colour looking good through the summer months is to take extra care. The sun and the humidity can play havoc with the condition of coloured hair so use those heated styling tools as little as possible.

Instead, why not experiment with boho waves, they’re a great summer trend and are easy to achieve. After washing your hair, tie your hair into a topknot and leave to dry naturally. Once dry, undo the top-knot and run your fingers through the length of your hair to break up the curls and spritz with shine spray for a glossy finish.

If you do need to use heated styling tools, always use a heat protection spray to ensure your hair is protected at all times and to avoid further damage being done to your hair!

If the sun has dried out your coloured hair you’ll need to get the nutrients back in to restore it to its former shiny self. You can do this by using a hair conditioning oil. Luckily, the wet-look has been all over catwalks and is an ideal holiday hairstyle, especially if you’re hitting the beach. Spritz the hair with an oil spray or slick the hair back with a hair serum and comb through for a glamorous night time style.

Oils and serums can also be used prior to blow-drying to seal split ends and condition and protect the hair. Hair masks should also be used at least twice a week during the summer months to provide the hair with the nourishment it needs and to keep colour sealed in.
