The Leith Collective Launches Winter Coat Exchange

The Leith Collective is launching its Winter Coat Exchange on Thursday 1 October to help people in Edinburgh stay warm this winter.

The local Community Interest Company rehomed more than 10,000 good quality coats through last year’s scheme. This year, it is expanding the initiative to include jumpers, blankets, scarves, hats and gloves.

The exchange comes as household energy costs rise again. Ofgem has confirmed that the energy price cap will increase by 4% from 1 October 2026, taking a typical annual dual-fuel bill from £1,663 to £1,723 if paid by direct debit.

The Leith Collective says the combination of higher bills and wider pressure on household budgets means more families could struggle to afford warm clothing over the colder months.

Sara Thomson, founder of The Leith Collective, said:

“Families here in Edinburgh are facing real hardship, and the prospects for this winter are bleak if we do not step in and help.

“We have spoken to countless people who cannot afford to heat their homes, cook a decent meal or buy coats and jumpers to stay warm. That is why we are calling on businesses, organisations, charities, community groups and individuals to donate and distribute good quality winter clothing to bring warmth, comfort and dignity to those in need.”

Organisations can sign up to become an official Winter Coat Exchange Collection Point through The Leith Collective’s sustainable marketplace, We Relove.

People who need warm clothing can also use the website to enter their postcode and find their nearest collection point. Clothing is available free of charge and without judgement.
