Turner in January 2027

Turner in January returns to the National Galleries of Scotland: National, on the Mound, from 1 to 31 January 2027. The free annual exhibition displays 38 watercolours by JMW Turner, from the collection left to Scotland by Henry Vaughan in 1900.

The display is an Edinburgh tradition with an unusual condition attached. Vaughan stipulated that the delicate watercolours should be shown only in January, when natural daylight is comparatively weak. That means there is just one month each year to see the group together.

What to Expect

The paintings span different periods of Turner’s career. The gallery highlights include Harbour View, Loch Coruisk, Skye, and The Piazzetta, Venice. Between atmospheric scenery, architectural subjects, and experiments in light, the collection shows why Turner remained so influential.

Planning Your Visit

This is a straightforward city-centre visit: the National is on the Mound, between Princes Street and the Royal Mile, and the gallery lists opening hours of 10am to 5pm daily. Admission is free, but the January display ends on 31 January, so there is no extension into February.

Full dates, access information, and any changes are published on the official event page.
