Art by Yasmina Reza comes to the Netherbow Theatre at the Scottish Storytelling Centre from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 November 2026.
Edinburgh People’s Theatre stages Christopher Hampton’s translation of Yasmina Reza’s sharp comedy about friendship, taste, status, and one very expensive white painting.
The production follows Serge, Marc, and Yvan as a disagreement over a newly bought artwork turns into something much more personal. What begins as a row about whether a white painting is really art soon exposes the pressure points in a long friendship.

What To Expect
Art is built around a deceptively simple question: how much would you pay for a white painting? For Serge, the purchase is serious and meaningful. For Marc, it is ridiculous. Yvan, caught between them, tries to keep the peace and fails.
Christopher Hampton’s English translation had its British premiere at Wyndham’s Theatre in London in 1996. The play went on to win major awards, including the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy, and the Tony Award for Best Play.
