Edinburgh smashes record for company formation

New figures released by Duport.co.uk show that company formation in Edinburgh reached an all-time high during 2013.

The latest Duport Business Confidence Report for Edinburgh shows there were a record number of new company formations in the area during 2013. Over the last year, there were 5775 new companies formed in and around Edinburgh – more than any other year on record and a 2% rise on 2012.

The Duport Report shows that unlike many other areas of the UK, company formation numbers stayed fairly stable during the financial crash of 2008 and 2009. In fact, company formation numbers have risen every year since 2009.

The growing number of company formations could be linked to regeneration projects that are going on in the area, such as the development of the waterfront along the shores of the Firth of Forth in Leith and Granton.

Managing Director of Duport.co.uk, Peter Valaitis commented: “The record number of company formations is a really positive sign for the economy of Edinburgh and shows that entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the city.”
