Edinburgh invited to nominate favourite local green space

NATIONWIDE SEARCH LAUNCHED TO FIND ‘UK’S BEST PARK’

National charity Fields in Trust launches new campaign as part of annual awards

A nationwide search has been launched to help find the ‘UK’s Best Park’. Communities across the country are being invited to nominate their favourite local park, sports field or playground to be in with a chance of their local space claiming the title.

The quest to find the nation’s best local green space has been launched by national charity Fields in Trust, which aims to safeguard recreational spaces and campaigns for better statutory protection for outdoor space. It comes as the charity reveals the categories for its annual Awards which celebrate the contributions and achievements of people and organisations who are passionate about green spaces. This will be the first year that the title of ‘UK’s Best Park’ has been awarded and the first time that members of the public have been asked to help decide a winner in the Awards.

Fields in Trust, which was founded 90 years ago by King George V, has a mission to ensure that everyone – young or old, able-bodied or disabled and wherever they live – should have access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation.

Helen Griffiths, Fields in Trust Chief Executive said: “Outdoor spaces are vital to building happy and healthy communities. We know that there are thousands of locations across the country that play exceptionally important roles in people’s lives, whether it’s your local park where you walk the dog or a playpark where you have met other parents who have become life-long friends. Our new Award is a chance to shout about these valuable spaces that are so intrinsic in helping bring people together.

“Entering is quick and easy. Simply visit our website and upload your nomination with a photo and up to 50 words about why it’s so special. All the nominations will form a shortlist and members of the public will then cast their vote, so it’s worth mobilising support from your family and friends! We wish everyone the very best of luck.”

Nominations should be made via the Fields in Trust website by Wednesday 4th November. A public vote will take place from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 25th November. The three parks with the highest number of votes will be shortlisted. The first person to nominate each of the three parks will be invited to attend the Fields in Trust Awards Ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Wednesday 2nd December.

    About Fields in Trust

Fields in Trust is a national charity that operates throughout the UK to safeguard recreational spaces and campaign for better statutory protection for all kinds of outdoor sites.

Founded in 1925 as the National Playing Fields Association by King George V, their mission is the same now and as it was then: to ensure that everyone – young or old, able-bodied or disabled and wherever they live – should have access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation.

These spaces are vital to building happy and healthy communities and sadly continue to be threatened by all kinds of development.

Fields in Trust will soon launch its new Planning Guidance for Outdoor Sport and Play Provision (England). More details can be found here: http://www.fieldsintrust.org
