Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026 Begins With More Than 3,600 Shows
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026 is officially underway, with thousands of performers and audiences arriving in the capital for another packed August of comedy, theatre, music, cabaret, dance, and more.
Running from 7 to 31 August, this year’s Fringe programme features 3,649 shows across 258 venues, adding up to a remarkable 53,884 performances during the festival. Artists from 71 countries are represented in the programme.
For Edinburgh, it marks the beginning of the busiest few weeks of the year, with venues ranging from major established Fringe hubs to pubs, churches, theatres, temporary spaces, and some rather more unusual locations.

New and Returning Fringe Venues for 2026
There are some interesting additions to the Fringe landscape this year.
One of the biggest returns is Gilded Balloon Teviot, which is back in action after being closed for renovations since September 2023. The historic student union building has long been one of the best-known Fringe hubs in the city.
Summerhall is offering something considerably less conventional with Sauna Theatre, a working sauna being used for performances, storytelling, choreography, and events.
Elsewhere, Brown’s of Leith is hosting a site-specific adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies inside its Victorian engineering works, while Pianodrome has opened a second location at St Oswald’s, featuring an amphitheatre constructed from discarded pianos.
Hundreds of Lower-Cost Fringe Shows
The Fringe does not have to mean spending a fortune on tickets.
This year’s programme contains 691 Pay What You Want or Pay What You Can shows, giving audiences the chance to explore smaller productions and emerging performers without committing to standard ticket prices.
The official Fringe programme and app can also be used to search by date, venue, genre, and location, with shows continuing to be added even after the festival has begun.
