Dynamic Earth welcomes Festival of Physics

This October, five star visitor attraction, Dynamic Earth, is welcoming the Festival of Physics for three days of scientific fun and discovery.

From Friday 26 until Sunday 28 October, visitors of all ages are invited to celebrate the wonder of science in the inspirational setting of Dynamic Earth. The three-day festival is jam-packed with free events, science shows, hands-on workshops and fascinating experiences. Combining daytime family fun with illuminating adult evening events, there really is something for everyone.

While science is the focus, the Festival moves away from what many would deem ‘conventional’ science activities, with events including poetry, art, music, cooking, Harry Potter-style potion classes, chocolate experiments and even a ceilidh.

The theme of the 2018 Festival is Time, so events include world-leading theoretical physicists alongside local scientists and creatives exploring the concept of time from a number of different facets through astronomy, getting a portrait photo taken at the speed of light, colour experimentation, a molecular chemistry-inspired computer game and a beautiful 360 degree film, Star Maker, screened Dynamic Earth’s showdome.

The Festival of Physics is a joint venture between the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Physics in Scotland. It was designed to focus not just on science, but also the power of curiosity and the inventions and discoveries that shape the world.

Dr Hermione Cockburn, Scientific Director at Dynamic Earth said: “We are so excited to be supporting the Festival of Physics. Dynamic Earth is the ideal place for it – especially given this year’s theme of exploring time. The wonderful array of activities and events on offer mean there is something for everyone, and I, for one, can’t wait to join in!”

Siân Hickson, public engagement manager for the IOP in Scotland and chief organiser for the Festival of Physics, added: “After the success of our inaugural event last year, the Festival of Physics is back, bigger and better. The programme aims to cater for the curious of all ages and stripes, not just those interested in science, and all of the family events are free, which we hope will encourage people to come along and give it a try.”

Activities will run from 10am until 5pm, Friday 26 – Sunday 28 October, with adult evening events taking place on the Friday and Saturday nights. All of the family events are free to attend. Due to limited spaces, three of the adult events are ticketed with a £3 charge. All other adult programme events are free.
