Royal Scottish Academy

The Royal Scottish Academy is an independent, artist-led institution based in the landmark Royal Scottish Academy Building on The Mound. Founded in 1826, it supports Scottish art and architecture through exhibitions, events, artist opportunities, and its collection and archive.

The RSA runs a year-round programme from the building, while National Galleries of Scotland and other arts organisations also use parts of the venue for temporary exhibitions. That means what is open can change through the year.

What to See at the Royal Scottish Academy

The galleries host changing exhibitions covering painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, and contemporary visual art. The programme mixes work by Royal Scottish Academicians with major exhibitions, emerging artists, talks, and other events.

The RSA also maintains a collection, archive, and library connected with Scottish art and the history of the Academy. Its Academicians’ Gallery gives the organisation a continuing presence in the building even when the main exhibition spaces are being used by another programme.

Opening Hours and Admission

Usual gallery opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, 12pm to 5pm. Most RSA exhibitions are free and do not require advance booking, although some exhibitions and events are ticketed.

The exhibitions are temporary, and the RSA can close gallery spaces for one to two weeks during changeovers. Check the current programme before making a special trip.

Location and Getting There

The Royal Scottish Academy is at The Mound, Edinburgh EH2 2EL, between Princes Street and Edinburgh’s Old Town. The main public entrance faces Princes Street.

Princes Street tram stop is close by, many city-centre buses stop on Princes Street and nearby streets, and Waverley Station is a short walk away. Parking in the immediate area is limited.

Accessibility

Step-free access is available through the South entrance at the rear of the RSA building, opposite the National Gallery. A ramp and lift provide access to all floors, and accessible toilets are available inside.
