Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is one of Edinburgh’s oldest and most-loved attractions, delighting visitors since 1853. Perched at the top of the Royal Mile beside Edinburgh Castle, it offers a fascinating mix of Victorian charm and modern optical wizardry.
Spread across five floors, it’s packed with hands-on exhibits, puzzles, and interactive illusions that play with your senses. From shrinking rooms and holograms to vortex tunnels and mirror mazes, it’s a playful mix of art and science designed for all ages.
At the heart of it is the original Camera Obscura show — a 19th-century optical projection that uses mirrors and sunlight to display a live moving image of Edinburgh onto a viewing table. It’s an experience that connects history, technology, and a bit of old-school magic.
