Royal Observatory Blackford Hill Edinburgh

Blackford Hill & Royal Observatory

Blackford Hill is one of Edinburgh’s best high viewpoints — a rugged, grassy hill overlooking the city, with open skies, wildlife and sweeping views towards Arthur’s Seat, the Castle, the Pentlands and the Firth of Forth. It’s quieter than Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat, making it perfect for walkers who want space and a bit of peace.

At the summit sits the Royal Observatory, home to astronomy research, domes, telescopes, and public open nights throughout the year. Even when closed, the buildings add real character to the hill, especially at sunset when the domes silhouette against the sky.

The hill connects directly to the Hermitage of Braid Nature Reserve, a lovely wooded valley with streams, bridges, and wildlife — ideal for longer circular walks.

Highlights:

  • Wide panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Pentlands
  • Royal Observatory domes at the summit
  • Direct access to the Hermitage of Braid woodland
  • Popular for walking, photography, stargazing, and picnics
  • Much quieter and more local than the busier city hills
  • Great sunrise and sunset spot with big skies
