Situated at the top of Leith Walk, opposite the Edinburgh Playhouse and right next door to Khushi’s Indian restuarant, this new French bistro restaurant opened in the summer of 2018 and is named after the French novelist, poet, and playwright, Jules Verne who is most famous for creating Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).

We went and tried their pre-theatre Set Menu options (well it’s actually available from 12-7pm where you can get 2 courses for just £12.90 or 3 courses for £15.50. Bottles of wine start from around £18 with our nice Malbec coming in at £24.95. It nicely complimented the ribeye steak and lamb dishes we chose.

Our starters were the rillette of salmon and a pork and pistachio terrine. They were both very tasty.  After the lovely appetisers and main dishes we were a slightly disappointed with the deserts of Pear and Apricot tart and Chocolate Brownie both with ice cream.

Overall, a very nice meal – the service was friendly and efficient however the experience could have been improved with better decor to aid the ambiance so we give this place 4.3 stars. We’d definitely go back there.

Below are pics of our food, we would love it if you would leave your own comments and reviews / pics further below.

You can book a table online here on the Jules Verne Edinburgh web site.

Our Edinburgh247 reviewers rated this new French restaurant as 4.5 stars

Ideally situated for some pre theatre food before heading off to see a show at the Edinburgh Playhouse just across the street.
