Edinburgh Playhouse

  • Edinburgh Playhouse

The Edinburgh Playhouse is a former cinema which now hosts touring musicals and music concerts.

Originally designed as a theatre by the Glasgow architect, John Fairweather, the Playhouse opened as Scotland’s biggest cinema in the first year of the ‘talkies’ in 1929. It closed in 1974 and was scheduled for demolition, but, thanks to local petitions which collected almost 30,000 signatures, it was saved, renovated and re-opened as a theatre in 1993. Its seating capacity of 3,059 is still the largest of any theatre building in the UK.

Looking for something to eat pre-show? They have a new bar menu. Orders can be taken from 2 hours to 30 minutes prior to the performance time, exclusively for ticket holders. Menu includes Seafood Chowder at £7.50 and Thai Green Curry /  Gourmet Steak Burger & Fries for just £8.50.
