Accessible glamping comes to Dundas Castle

Luxury Edinburgh venue, Dundas Castle has relaunched its five star glamping facilities for summer 2017 with the addition of a fully accessible unit for wheelchair users and guests with disabled access needs.

As with all ten of the luxurious canvas cottages, the accessible glamping tent is set on its own grassy knoll and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, on the shores of the private Dundas Estate loch.

However, mindful of guests’ needs, the accessible unit has its own short wooden wheelchair ramp, just feet from the access road.  The entrance door is over four feet wide and full height, allowing unhindered access.  Inside, the canvas cottage is larger than the others and the gorgeous wooden furniture is laid out to ensure there is plenty of room to navigate easily.

The large ensuite bathroom is accessed through another full height door and features a propane powered shower with hot and cold running water, toiletries and composting toilet and sink, all with wheelchair height controls and hand rails.

With prices starting at £159 per night, each Canvas Cottage contains a comfy king size bed complete with Egyptian cotton bedding, soft pillows and a cosy duvet. All units also include a fully equipped kitchen cupboard, wood burning stoves with a supply of logs for warmth and cooking inside, barbecues, USB ports for charging devices, towels, lighting, patio heaters, comfy seating and a lockable safe box.

Owner of Dundas Castle, Sir Jack Stewart-Clark comments: “We are very proud of the glamping facilities on the loch and the addition of the accessible unit makes the luxury and enjoyment of glamping available to everyone.  Glamping was so popular last year, we are confident with the expansion and new facilities that we will see a record number of people on the estate this year.”

Gus and Liz Kane who got married at Dundas Castle in June 2016 were the first to book a stay in the new accessible unit. Liz said:

“We love Dundas Castle – the grounds are beautiful and a joy to visit, so we’re always keen to return. We stayed at the glamping site in September last year, and while we had a brilliant time, we found that the site wasn’t very accessible – Gus couldn’t really move around and walking down the stairs was difficult. We thought glamping was maybe out for us, but when we saw a post on Facebook about the changes we were really excited and had to give it a try.

“We had a great time! The new unit worked well – there’s plenty of room for a wheelchair everywhere on the site, supplies were plentiful, the wood burning stove was great –as was the space heater on the patio – and the bed was extremely comfortable. We had a really lovely, peaceful time, and it was a lot of fun.”

Dundas Castle is a five star exclusive-use venue suitable for group events, corporate meetings and weddings for up to 200 people. The Castle has seventeen luxury bedrooms plus a range of meeting rooms and event spaces both within the Castle and its extensive grounds. Situated on the loch, the Castle also offers self-catering within its romantic getaway, four star Boathouse.
