The Edinburgh Dungeon

Edinburgh Dungeon is a 70 to 75-minute walk-through attraction on Market Street, close to Waverley Station. Live actors, theatrical sets, special effects and rides turn episodes from Edinburgh and Scottish history into a fast-moving show rather than a traditional museum visit.

The route moves through scenes linked to crime, punishment, plague, witch trials and other darker chapters from the past. Audience participation is part of the format, so visitors may be drawn into the action. The attraction recommends the experience for ages eight and over, although families should judge whether younger children will enjoy the scares and loud effects.

Planning a Visit

Entry is booked for a timed slot, and the official site advises arriving shortly before the time shown on the ticket. Opening hours and prices vary by date, so booking ahead is sensible during weekends, school holidays and the Edinburgh Festival period.

Getting There

The entrance is on Market Street, directly below the Old Town and a few minutes from Edinburgh Waverley. Buses and trams stop around Princes Street, North Bridge and the station area. Check the official Edinburgh Dungeon website before travelling.
