The Water of Leith Walkway is one of Edinburgh’s most scenic routes — a 12-mile riverside path that winds quietly through the city from the Pentlands to the docks in Leith. It’s flat, peaceful and full of wildlife, passing under old stone bridges and through leafy woodland that feels a world away from the streets above.

Popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and photographers, the walkway connects some of Edinburgh’s prettiest neighbourhoods: Slateford, Murrayfield, Dean Village, Stockbridge, Canonmills and finally The Shore.

Many people dip in for short, gentle sections, while others take on the full route as a day walk.
