Lost Shore Surf Resort

Lost Shore Surf Resort in Ratho is home to Europe’s largest wave pool and is described as the world’s first inland surf resort.

The wave pool is around three times the size of a Wembley football pitch and can generate up to 1,000 waves an hour for different surfing levels.

The scale makes Lost Shore much more than a specialist surf facility. The 60-acre site also has accommodation, food and drink beside the water, a surf shop, SurfSkate Academy, wellness treatments, sauna sessions, walking space, equipment hire, and event rooms.

You can visit the resort without booking a surf session, and general entry to the site is free.

What to Expect at Lost Shore

The main attraction is the Cove, where controlled waves allow beginners, improving surfers, and experienced riders to book sessions suited to their ability. Surf bookings include core equipment such as a wetsuit and foam surfboard, with boots, gloves, hoods, and helmets also available where required.

You don’t need to get in the water to make use of the site. A waterfront viewing area looks across the wave pool, while the food spaces give non-surfers somewhere to sit, eat, and watch the sessions.

The resort also has 53 accommodation units across Hilltop Lodges, Waterfront Lodges, and Waterfront Pods, including accessible units.

Getting to Lost Shore

Lost Shore is beside the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at South Platt Hill, west of Ratho village. It’s around 10 minutes by car from Edinburgh Airport and has on-site parking.

Public transport became much easier in September 2026 with the launch of Service 67 from Edinburgh city centre to Lost Shore and EICA Ratho. The direct route also serves Haymarket, Hermiston Park & Ride, and Ratho village. Check the latest timetable before travelling, especially at weekends while the new service beds in.

Good to Know

Surf sessions, accommodation, spa treatments, and some other activities need separate bookings. Hours also change with daylight and the season, so the official opening-times page is the best place to check the day’s schedule.

For a first visit, allow extra time before a booked surf to park, reach reception, change, and collect equipment. If you are only going to watch, eat, or have a look around, you can still enter the resort without buying a surf ticket.
