7 things to do at night time in Edinburgh

Sneaky Petes Edinburgh

Stuck in Edinburgh for the night? There are worse places to be.

There is something for everybody in Scotland’s second city. Whether you fancy a night of clubbing or a trip to the theatre, we’ve got you covered.

Edinburgh Nightclubs

Edinburgh is well known for its nightlife, particularly in the Old Town part of the city. Sneaky Pete’s is a relatively small venue which will see to all your rock needs but if you’re wanting something a bit more electronic, there are plenty of options available.

Cabaret Voltaire has long been one of the most popular underground clubs in Edinburgh. It’s one of the best looking venues and will play mostly house, techno and bass. The Liquid Room will offer similar music with a little more variety and must be considered amongst the most popular spots in the city.

Edinburgh Bars & Pubs

Fancy a quieter night? You can get that in Edinburgh too. If you’re in Old Town then there are any number of bars and pubs to sit and relax in including The Waverley, The Devil’s Advocate and Bow Bar which claims to have over 230 brands of whiskey. Or head for the 600-year-old pub, The Sheep Heid Inn to immerse yourself in history.

Are you after something a bit more formal? The Dome is one of the grandest buildings in the city and in true Scottish fashion they filled it with a bar. After a few drinks there, head over to Genting Casino for a few rounds of cards and if you don’t know what a full house is, or what the heck a Martingale strategy is in roulette speak, you might want to brush up on your technique first – there is an array of trusted casino sites for help.

Edinburgh Restaurants

You bet Edinburgh has some great restaurants. If you want to spend a bit more on a special meal, The Kitchin is hugely popular as is Number One at the Balmoral, run by Michelin-Starred head chef, Brian Grigor.

The Taste of Italy and The Jolly Judge Pub serve you up something a little less costly but you’re in Scotland so why not get some haggis? Arcade Bar Haggis & Whiskey House will sort you out.

Edinburgh Live music and comedy

There’s something for everyone if you’re after live music in Edinburgh. The Royal Oak and Sandy’s Bell are your best stops for live folk tunes, while you can head to Jazz Bar or Henry’s Cellar Bar for all your jazz and blues needs. The Jamhouse and Bannerman’s Bar are your best bets for rock.

If you’re in the mood for a laugh, there are comedy clubs across the city. Stand-ups, one-person shows and improve groups are often playing at clubs like The Stand and Monkey Barrel Comedy. For the larger touring acts, The Playhouse is the place to be so make sure you’ve got a ticket!

Edinburgh Theatre

Edinburgh is a historic city when it comes to theatre so pull up a seat if you’re in the mood for a live show. The city has some wonderful venues for a night on the town plays, musicals and performances going on across the city. The King’s Theatre, The Festival, The Royal Lyceum and Traverse are some of the city’s hotspots. Check out this theatre guide to see what’s on when you’re planning a trip.

Edinburgh Cinema

If you want something a little less formal, there are plenty of cinemas across the city. For the larger blockbusters, you have quite the selection of multiplexes. There are two Vues, three Odeons and Cineworld all in the city.

If you’re a film fan, there are plenty of smaller independent screens across the city too. Filmhouse not only offers all the latest releases but is also the home of the Edinburgh Film Festival. For a serious comfort upgrade, head to the Dominion Cinema with its comfortable leather armchairs.

Something a bit different…

Why do something you can do at home, right? There are clubs and cinemas everywhere so why not try something a little different? Edinburgh has you covered. For those who like their alcohol, check out Scottish Beer Tours for a range of walking and brewery tours with private or public groupings available.

If you’re in a group, why not try some team building? Lockedinburgh is the only escape game set in real buildings and not purpose-built sets. Search for clues and solve problems in a group of friends but be careful, you only have an hour.

Want to see the city? Check out Mercat Tours for a wide variety of trips including sightseeing, historical tours and, if you’re up for it, ghost hunting in the city’s underground tunnels.
