Director: Gary Winick Origin: United States Year: 2010 Duration: 105m Starring: Vanessa Redgrave, Gael Garcia Bernal, Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried (DEAR JOHN) hones her girl-next-door charm in typically effervescent fashion in this delectable romantic drama from rom-com maestro Winick (13 GOING ON 30, BRIDE WARS). Seyfried plays Sophie, an all-American girl on holiday in Verona, Italy, the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Enchanted by the romantic history of the Mediterranean town, Sophie finds an unanswered letter addressed to Juliet in the fictional lover's courtyard. Inspired by the passion poured into the lines of unrequited love, Sophie tracks down its author, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave, ATONEMENT), and the pair embark on a journey that will see both of them discover a love beyond their wildest dreams.

Director: Edgar Wright Origin: Canada, United States Year: 2010 Duration: 112m Starring: Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Michael Cera, Mary Winstead

Following the cult successes of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ, Spaced creator Edgar Wright goes Hollywood for his third feature, SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD. Billed as an 'epic of epic epicness', it's a candy-floss explosion of video game SFX and comic book nuance that promises to take the fanboy world by storm. Michael Cera (JUNO) stars as the eponymous nerd who falls hard for a rollerblading high-school cutie called Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, DIE HARD 4.0). But before he can win her heart, our docile hero is forced to face up to each one of Ramona's seven evil exes. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel, Wright's film is an electrifying visual feast in the KICK-ASS vein.

Director: Jan Kounen Origin: France Year: 2010 Duration: 119m Starring: Anna Mouglalis, Mads Mikkelsen

This sumptuous biopic delves into the style icon's past to bring her creative inspirations to the fore. The year is 1913, and Coco Chanel (Mouglalis, GAINSBOURG) meets Igor Stravinsky (Mikkelsen, VALHALLA RISING) for the first time, at a performance of his revolutionary yet then controversial ballet, The Rite of Spring. Seven years later and Stravinsky is broke and living on the margins of society. From here Kounen spotlights the unique and passionate relationship between the two inimitable cultural forces, telling how their friendship bloomed into a fiery love affair that would profoundly alter the course of both their lives. As Chanel launches her signature scent, No.5, nurturing her label into a world famous brand, Stravinsky sets about rebuilding his shattered career to change the face of classical music forever.

Director: Joann Sfar Origin: France, United States Year: 2010 Duration: 122m Starring: Doug Jones, Laetitia Casta, Lucy Gordon, Eric Elmosnino

While so many biopics can be criticised for idolising their subject, GAINSBOURG stands up as a frank look at the life of an enigmatic musician whose legacy is second only to his legend. Based on director Sfar's graphic novel of the same name, the film offers an introspective glimpse into the world of French singer Serge Gainsbourg, from his tough childhood growing up in Nazi-occupied Paris to his death in 1991, via his troubled yet hugely successful time as a songwriter in the 1960s. Eric Elmosnino (THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN) is uncanny as the eponymous artiste, while Sfar's elegant direction makes this a poetic homage that will thrill Gainsbourg disciples and the uninitiated alike.
