Students Bring Edwardian Style To Festival Theatre

Exquisite tailoring and elegant Edwardian silhouettes will be taking over Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre as Edinburgh College Costume students display their work in a new exhibition.

The exhibition – Edwardian Costume for Performance – will feature garments created by students from the college’s HND Costume for Stage and Screen course and will run at Festival Theatre from 5-19 June 2018.     The exhibition is a part of Edinburgh College’s Glow Festival, which showcases the talents of its Creative Industries students over a two-month period across the city.

The students will be presenting 11 Edwardian-themed costumes designed by Edinburgh College lecturer Anya Glinski.     As part of their course, students interpreted Anya’s designs and used the skills they developed during their time at college including pattern cutting, fitting the costumes on selected models and constructing costumes using industry-standard techniques and machines.

The students were encouraged to apply modern and historical principles of tailoring to reflect fashions from the bygone era.     Costume for Stage and Screen student Holly Black said: “We’ve all worked really hard to bring Anya’s designs to life. It was a long but enjoyable process pulling the looks together and using new techniques. I’m looking forward to sharing our work with visitors to the theatre.”

Edinburgh College Performing Arts lecturer Liz McCafferty said: “Some of the group were a little daunted at the beginning of the project but they worked through each of the tasks step-by-step and have managed to produce the full silhouette of an Edwardian lady from head to hem – which is no easy feat. I can’t wait to see all of the costumes together in the theatre.”

Edwardian Costume for Performance is open daily from 10am-6pm, from 5 – 19 June at Festival Theatre, 13-29 Nicolson St, Edinburgh EH8 9FT and is free for all visitors.

Glow festival runs until 19 June, with a variety of performances and exhibitions across Edinburgh. Find out more: www.edinburghcollege.ac.uk/glow
