A new spoken word performance from Martin O’Connor, exploring Glasgow’s relationship with alcohol, created in collaboration with those in recovery from alcohol addiction from Glasgow’s North East Recovery Community.
This performance follows on from Martin’s previous acclaimed spoken word shows Theology and Building a Nation and offers a multi-layered, moving and irreverent look at our societal and personal relationships with ‘the demon drink’.
Performed in Glaswegian Scots and employing an evocative verbatim soundtrack by Nichola Scrutton, The Mark of the Beast looks at early experiences of drunkenness, family parties, teenage socializing, as well as Scottish male identity involving violence and pride, and questions the role that alcohol plays in our society as a whole.
‘A display of nuanced language and imagery that confirms him as a brave and significant dramatic poet in contemporary Scotland’ (Scotsman)
‘His strength is his humour and ear for the spoken word… fiercely moral and suffused with compassion’ (Skinny)
Produced in association with Platform.
