Be part of your community at Edinburgh College’s Granton Community Day

Edinburgh College is opening its doors for a day of community spirit and celebration at its Granton Campus next month.

Families, community groups and local businesses are all invited to the college’s Granton Community Day to find out what the college has to offer and the role it has at the heart of the local community.

The Granton Community Day will take place at the college campus on West Granton Road on Saturday 12 May from 10am until 2pm. The college is hosting the day while major development work that will transform the Granton area over the next few years continues.

The day is free to attend, open to all and will include a wide range of activities hosted by students, staff and community groups – all free. The college will showcase what goes on in its full-time and part-time courses as well as the services and facilities it offers beyond the student curriculum. These include its restaurants, salons and nursery, which are open to the public.

Students and lecturers from the college’s Hair and Beauty Therapy department will be offering Indian head massages, hand massages and hair-styling, as well as demonstrating their product ranges and giving guided tours of their departments.

There will be more fun in the form of food demonstrations and tasting, and the opportunity to sample and buy products made by Professional Cookery students including jam, chutney, chocolates and baked goods.

Guests will get to try out aerial pilates classes. Music students will perform throughout the day. And there will be a chance to learn about college subjects through practical activities, including taking on the Engineering team’s virtual welding challenge and getting up close with the college’s fleet of electric vehicles.

Local organisations and charities including granton:hub, will also be coming along to show what they do in the local area.

Social Bite, the charity that supports homeless people across Scotland, will also be among them. The charity will welcome the first residents to its 10-house village for homeless people in Granton next month.

The City of Edinburgh Council will also be in attendance at the event to talk to the community about their regeneration strategy to create a new vibrant sustainable city quarter. This will include around 4000 new homes, commercial and creative space with placemaking at the heart of any future development.

Annette Bruton, Principal of Edinburgh College, said: “We’re really excited and looking forward to welcoming the local community, to celebrate all that we have on our doorstep and come together at a very exciting time for the area.

“Our college is an important part of the local community and we want our neighbours in the community to see there’s much more going on here than they might realise.  For anyone who lives or works in Granton and who has never been inside the building this is a perfect opportunity to see what is on your doorstep. This event is about building and maintaining strong relationships with all of our neighbours and partners in Granton, and showing what we can offer them. The Granton area is about go through exciting and significant development so this will bring about many opportunities for us to work closely with our community.”

City of Edinburgh Council Depute Leader Cammy Day said: “This community open day is a great chance for residents to find out more about the college and what it offers the wider community. It will be a great day showing not only the wide range of courses available but also how the campus can serve the community. Residents will also be able to meet organisations and charities working hard in the area and learn more about the about the exciting wider development of Granton. I recently visited the campus myself and was very impressed and I would encourage everyone to head along and take part in the day.”
