Recruiting Volunteer ESOL home tutors

Edinburgh College recruiting volunteer ESOL home tutors

Edinburgh College is inviting volunteers to teach English one to one in students’ own homes as part of a scheme to support people who cannot get to a classroom.

Edinburgh College’s Home Learning Scheme opens up public life for refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers by giving them a better grasp of the English language and UK culture. Volunteer tutors will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience by giving weekly lessons over nine months to students who cannot get to classes the college runs in other community settings. Attending community-based classes is not possible for some people for reasons such as health, childcare or the need for additional support.

The Home Learning Scheme is run by the college’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department, which provides English lessons at all levels within the college and out in the community.

The teaching opportunity will involve four to five hours per week for nine months including travel, preparation and tutoring. Each volunteer will have a support worker who will offer guidance and advice on teaching, and travel expenses are paid Students come from a range of countries including Sudan, Syria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Anyone interested can attend information and selection sessions in August at Edinburgh College’s Sighthill Campus. These will be followed by a training course for all successful applicants.
