Deep Sea World, Scotland’s national aquarium is launching a special photography competition in the run-up to World Oceans Day on Sunday, June 8th.

WOD is a worldwide event aimed at raising awareness of the marine environment. The concept for a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2008 it was officially recognised by the UN as an annual event.

On World Oceans Day itself visitors to the aquarium will be able to find out more about marine conservation projects as well as the impact of pollution on our seas through a series of talks and demonstrations.

In the run up to the event Deep Sea World is also launching a ‘World Oceans Day Photography Competition’. Visitors of all ages are being invited to capture images of the aquatic creatures that call Deep Sea World home.

Photographs can be entered in three categories: ‘Junior Category’ – any pictures of the aquatic animals and their displays taken by someone under 16, ‘Deep Sea World Category’ – any pictures taken of the animals at DSW and ‘Under the Sea’ – any picture taken of anything under the sea.

The photos will then go on display in the aquarium in time for World Oceans Day for the public to view and get inspired to join in.

The competition will run from Sunday, May 25th until Thursday June 12th when all the photographs will be uploaded to Deep Sea World’s Facebook Page

It is then up to entrants to tag themselves and get their friends to like their entry.  The five pictures in each category with the most likes will become our 15 finalists, and the winners will then be decided by a panel made up from the Deep Sea World Management team.

There will be prizes up for grabs for the winners of each category with an overall winner and ultimate prize of an annual membership.

Digital photo entries, with a maximum individual size of three megabytes, can be entered via email to competition@deepseaworld.co.uk . Please include your name, age and contact details. The competition is not open to professional photographers.
