The Royal Oak is a real Scottish pub that has made its name as a live music venue. Steeped in history and atmosphere it is only a few minutes walk from the Royal Mile. With a fine tradition of musical entertainment every single night of the week you can hear mainly folk songs with a mix of other acoustic styles. The Royal Oak not only gives visitors the chance to hear some great tunes, but it also acts as a focal point for many of Edinburgh’s traditional musicians.

The Royal Oak is a small pub on two floors at the heart of the old town folk music scene. The relaxed acoustic music sessions are always open to guest players who can still tell their arse from their elbow.
Expect local vocals, travelling troubadors, singalongs, auld folks and young, original music, classic covers, braw banter, late night rambling drunks dribbling the dregs of conversation around your weary ears and the best beards you’ll find anywhere in Edinburgh. Hopefully some fine fiddles, whistles and accordions too.
Local Songwriting Legend Bobby Nicolson is a regular here, known for his excellently quirky tragic-comic songs, broad accent and face that fits the story perfectly.
The atmosphere is best when most of the crowd are aware of the music and either listening or participating in it. It gets to be a pain when the rabble drown out the music and the musicians get frustrated though but the same could be said of most live music venues.
Go to the oak with the feeling to get involved in live music.
