Cameo Picturehouse

  • Cameo-Cinema-Edinburgh

The Cameo is an Edinburgh cinema which started life as the King’s Cinema on 8 January 1914 and is one of the oldest cinemas in Scotland still in use.

Since becoming the Cameo in 1949, it has been an independent cinema with a tradition of showing art house films.

From 1949 onward it has been an important venue for the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It is at Tollcross, and since 1992 has been a three-screen cinema.

The Cameo is currently part of the Picturehouse chain, owned by Cineworld.

I love going here, nice cosy cinema where you can grab a pint and a snack in the bar before your movie. The main Screen 1 has just been refurbished in Summer 2013, there are also 2 other smaller screens.

Prices are currently around £7 mark and there are popcorn, sweeties and juice. They even let you take your beer into the cinema in plastic cups 🙂

Show great films too, from mainstream hits to foreign and independent art house.
    Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this cinema! As it celebrates it’s 100th anniversary it is already an Edinburgh Institution with tons of character. The seating is very comfortable and spacious and the new reclining chairs in Screen 1 make for a very relaxing evening.
We particularly like the range of films shown here- which includes those from film festivals, international alongside more mainstream movies.
It is a special place for us 5 years ago we went for a first day- and now celebrated our first wedding anniversary with a trip to see ‘Boyhood’. Thanks Cameo!

I also want to go and see Boyhood, it sounds a very intriguing film. Maybe this week if it rains 🙂 It’s quite a long one isn’t it.

I contacted the Cameo recently about wheelchair facilities. They couldn’t have been more helpful: the seats were organised, tickets reserved and the visit accomplished with ease. Ours was a 3D movie, and we were encouraged to save our 3D specs to reuse them. It being Christmas, the foyer was nicely decorated with a lovely tree, the atmosphere was cosy and intimate, and the service – particularly from Corin – was A1. The auditorium door was open, making it a little cool, while the lights were a bit distracting, hence my 4/5 rating. The choice of films is wider and better than in my local cinema – I see a favourite vintage film of mine being screened this week – so I’ll be returning soon.
