Both the Modern One and Modern Two are wonderful buildings in there own right, and are set in lovely grounds, They are well worth visiting even though they are situated slightly out of the city centre. There is a free gallery bus which takes you there from the Scottish National Gallery at the Mound.
Until the 18th May at Modern One you are able to see Artists Rooms: Louise Bourgeois, a Woman Without Secrets. This is a fascinating exhibition of a wide range of the French-American artist’s works, including scultptures, drawings and the rooms are organised into different themes, which works really well.
The artist’s interest in psychoanalysis is very prevalent and so her work really makes you think of such subjects as memories, abandonement, maternity, and control and freedom. The information given for each of the works and the short film of Boutgeois’ assistant talking about the exhibition are excellent.
On the second floor until 4th May is the New Acquisitions exhibition, which has a wonderful collection of works from mainly Scottish artisits, but also works by Pablo Picasso, David Hockney and Joan Miró. I particularly enjoyed Ben River’s short film ‘This is my Land’ filmed in Aberdeenshire in 2006.
In addition, Modern One has a lovely cafe and little shop. After my visit I left filled with wonder and in a contemplative mood.
