A Competitive Edge To The Scottish Gin Industry

Marco’s Pool Hall plays host to the first ever Big Big Gin Pool Tournament

With Scotland currently producing 70% of the UK’s gin, and predictions that gin sales figures will surpass whisky by 2020, the Scottish gin industry is serious business. But you know what they say about ‘All work and no play…’. So with this in mind, the Edinburgh Corn Exchange, in association with The Scottish Gin Society and Marco’s Pool Hall, threw a get together for the leading names in Scottish gin. And things got quite competitive!

Taking place at Marco’s Pool Hall on Thursday 28th June, Scotland’s gin community came together to celebrate the spirit at the first ever Big Big Gin Pool Tournament. A total of 20 teams took part and, as the night progressed, the friendly competition turned into a nail-biting play-off that had everyone gripped.

Following the group stages, Wild Island, Old Curiosity and Kinrara were all neck and neck, so a killer game was required to separate them. Wild Island saw off the stiff competition, making it into the quarter finals, before breaking through to the finals, and ultimately clinching the title as the Big Big Gin Pool Tournament winner.

The night proved to be a huge hit with gin lovers and pool fans alike. Managing Director of Marco’s Pool Hall, and Director of the Big Big Gin Festival, Paul DeMarco commented; ‘Without all the amazing gins in Scotland, we wouldn’t have such an amazing Big Big Gin Festival. The brands work hard and produce such fantastic gins, and we just wanted to thank them for supporting the gin festival at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange, and get them all together for a fun night before our next show in October’.

The tournament proved to be such a success, there are now plans to make this an annual event. In the meantime, the pool players will be reunited later this year at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange’s Big Big Gin Festival, where the celebrations are set to continue on an even bigger scale!
