Edinburgh is a wonderful city.  Whether you’re experiencing it at day or night, it’s a place of historical wonder and cultural charm, venues that excite the taste buds and enrich the mind, leisure to entertain and sights to marvel at.

Of course, there’s only so much you can do and the Edinburgh guide books will lead newcomers to the likes of Edinburgh Castle, shopping on Victoria Street, afternoon tea at Colonnades, and a stroll through the Meadows of Edinburgh University.

When night falls, those who have ventured out to Arthur’s Seat, can then go below the city streets to sample the intrigue of Real Mary King’s Close, and wandered the Royal Mile, will turn their attentions to whisky tasting in Edinburgh’s many bars or fine dining in one of its world-renowned restaurants such as Martin Wishart’s flagship venue.

But if you want to try something different on an evening, or you’ve visited the city many times before and need a change, check out these alternative things to see and do in Edinburgh…

The Stand Comedy Club

Beyond the whisky tasting and nightclubs, your evening will get better (and funnier) with a visit to The Stand Comedy Club. Its locale (in an anonymous-looking basement) belies the style and charm of this venue. Once inside you’ll be able to enjoy good food, a well-stocked bar, and some great local comedy acts.

Ghillie Dhu

Forget the latest pop stars’ hits blaring from DJ’s speakers in the many nightclubs you can frequent in Edinburgh, try something more traditional instead. At Ghillie Dhu on Rutland Place on Friday and Saturday nights you can enjoy Scottish foods such as haggis and neeps while dancing to live music with a local flavour. Their official website is found at https://ghillie-dhu.co.uk/

Cabaret Voltaire

Can’t get enough music and dancing? Well, head down to Cabaret Voltaire for a laid-back evening of delicious Japanese street food and good music from DJs and live bands.

Genting Club Fountainpark

In all likelihood, you’ve joined everyone else with a smartphone playing the slots machines at online casinos like Betfair where, at https://casino.betfair.com/c/slots, you can try to line up the symbols in games like Anaconda Wild, Ronnie O’Sullivan Sporting Legends and Tiger Claw.

Take the game of chance to the real world casino at Genting Club Fountainpark on Dundee Street where you can play on lots of slots machines while also enjoying poker and roulette.

Pickering’s Gin Distillery Tour

There’s plenty of chance to sample the many whisky tours on offer in Edinburgh but gin is getting more and more popular. Summerhall is the place to see the Pickering’s Gin micro distillery behind The Royal Dick pub. Check out how it’s all done before enjoying a drink in the pub.

Edinburgh Filmhouse

Not just a venue to enjoy great independent cinema from around the world, Edinburgh Filmhouse has the added attraction of being the home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, https://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/edinburgh-international-film-festival. See a movie you won’t get in your local multiplex in one of the city’s most celebrated venues.
